Your Italy dreams are now within your reach
Under the Tuscan. Roman Holiday. House of Gucci. Your celluloid Italy fantasies are about to become reality because as of April 4, the Italian government has greenlit the new digital nomad visa that will give you the privilege of living, working and drinking a lot of wine in Italy for up to a year. I broke down the details of Italy’s new Digital Nomad Visa for AFAR.

Digital Nomad Visa Explained
The Digital Nomad Visa is a longer-term residence permits specifically for highly skilled, non-EU citizens. And it’s old news. Aside from sitting on Italian law books since 2022 , similar visa programs have already been in effect in countries including Spain, Portugal, Croatia, and Greece.
Under article 27 of Italy’s immigration code, digital nomads are defined as people who “carry out a highly professional activity, qualified through the use of technological tools that allows one to work remotely, independently, or for a company that is also not resident in the national territory.” In other words, this visa is for established freelancers, and contract workers and remote workers on the payroll of a business based in or outside of Italy. What do you have to prove that?
Applying for the Visa and Requirements
Here’s the fun part, eye roll. First, get very friendly with your regional Italian consulate and ask questions in advance so that allow you to pinpoint exactly what documentation you will need. The decree states that, along with a filled-out application form, you’ll provide proof of an annual income of at least $30,000, proof of accommodation, and proof of adequate health insurance.

To prove that you are an “established digital nomad”, current thinking is that you’ll have to provide evidence of at least six months of experience through letters of collaboration, employment, tbd. For remote worker, be prepared to show an employment or work contract. Finally, you will most likely be asked for your university or college degree, accredited professional license, or verifiable professional experience. All this will need to be officially translated.
Prior to doing any of this, it’s important to understand Italian tax obligations and your responsibilities. My best advice is to seek a tax professional in advance who can explain all mandatory requirements. Slightly overwhelming? Remember, the digital nomad visa is literally a new frontier in Italian immigration. It’s going to have some growing pains.
